Taiga maya - a "music-fiction"
2042 - Genesis of a traditional music of the future
A musical uchrony (12 track album) from the short story ‘Le Monde Circadien’ (Ebook, Podcast)
On the 21th of December 2012, the Earth collided with an asteroid and tilted a quarter turn on its axis, moving the North Pole to the equator.
A village in Yakutia (eastern Siberia) woke up to a scorching sun frozen at its zenith, while on the other side of the world, on the edge of the darkened southern hemisphere, Anton Sakhalin and his Mayan companions fled a dark and icy Mexico in search of the missing sun.
After seven years of wandering through a devastated world, the two communities met at the Bering Strait and found Bering-Or, a future city where everything had to be reinvented, even the darkness.
The year now is 2042 : Taiga Maya, Anton’s granddaughter, has gathered together the last archives from the world before the collision — the one
now known as ‘The Circadian World’, to create a fresco that tells the story of this Old World, where day still followed night, through music, images and
stories.

In my concept of ‘fictional music’, I write about the future and imagine the music that might one day exist. Taïga Maya is the music of a future civilisation, born of the chance encounter between the Yakuts of Siberia and the Mayas of southern Mexico after the major catastrophe of 2012. Set against a backdrop of shamanism, Taïga Maya shows the need to connect with the essence of life, with nature and with the non-ordinary reality that surrounds us. ‘The Circadian World tells the story of the young Taïga Maya and our submission to the cycles of nature and the cosmos. Using shamanic techniques, I conceived each element of this project and found in non-ordinary reality an unlimited source of inspiration and creativity. To the sound of the drum, I brought back from the shamanic ‘journeys’ the concepts, compositions, editing ideas, scenarios and musical arrangements of ‘Taïga Maya’.
Melanie Gabriel drew on traditional Yakut and Mayan themes to write the lyrics and perform the songs.
